COMMENTARY
Saturday dawned drizzling but cleared up enough for a lateish start, Costa Rica (CR) having arrived at the ground before most of the host team. Our bowlers got the early breaks on a drying pitch, chiefly through tight bowling by Arthur, Prasad and Sudesh, and Colombia managed only 84 for 9 in the 25 overs, top scorers being Sheth (17) and Wides (23). It rained lightly during lunch but the pitch was playable and CR made 90 runs for the loss of only two wickets, both runouts, winning by 8 wickets in 20.3 overs. Top scorers were Smith and Baker.
Sunday was a whole different ball game. After the standard morning drizzle, the sun shone for the hosts, who were fielding a stronger team than the day before. Lead by opener Geddes (31) and well supported by Farrington and Atkinson, as well as repeat top scorer, 35 painful CR Wides, Colombia cruised to 160 all out, 3 balls under the 30 over limit. Baker was our least expensive bowler. It poured with rain during lunch (Duckworth-Lewis looming as a factor) and again a bit in the middle of CR innings, but it was neither enough to dampen their opponents’ aggressive spirits, nor to account for the dismal collapse which took CR to 70 all out in 24.3 overs. A little resistance came from middle order batsmen Prasad and captain Olivier, but the bowling of Lonsdale and Farrington et al prevailed, Colombia winning convincingly by 90 runs.

Summary. Many congratulations to the Colombia teams on their play. Any notion CR might have harboured of an Affiliate being superior to a non-ICC side were hit for six in the second match. Wides being top scorer in both Colombia innings and a quarter of all runs scored, highlight a weakness which must be corrected. It was practice for CR’s upcoming participation in the official ICC Americas Division IV tournament to be held in Mexico City in June, against Cuba, Falkland Islands and Mexico, and at least prepared the team for the effects of altitude there of 2,100 metres.
